Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife is one of three universities founded in Nigeria between 1961 and 1962 as a result of a study submitted to the Federal Government in September 1960, appointed in April 1959 by the Commission under the chairmanship of Sir Eric Ashby, Master of Clare College, Cambridge, to examine the needs of post-secondary and higher education in Nigeria during the next twenty years.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University was formed as an offshoot of the defunct Anambra State Technology University (ASUTECH). ASUTECH, established by Law No. 7 of 30 July 1980, operated as a multi-campus university with campuses in Abakiliki, Enugu, Awka and Nnewi by the government of the old Anambra.

In 1991, following the splitting of the old Anambra State into Anambra and the Enugu States, the Anambra State Edict No.5 26 November 1991 constituted the Awka and Nnewi campuses of former ASUTECH into Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Through Decree No. 34 of 15 July 1992 Nnamdi Azikiwe University was taken over by the Federal Government.1991, following the splitting of the former Anambra State into Anambra and Enugu States, the Awka and Nnewi campuses of the former Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH) were combined into Nnamdi Azikiwe University, which was later taken over by Federal government.
