How Many Subjects Are Written in WAEC, NECO and GCE

O’level is another key prerequisite for gaining admission in Nigeria and WAEC, NECO & GCE are the most known O’level bodies used in gaining admission.

Just like I explained in my previous post that candidates registering for JAMB are allowed to register 4 subjects that are core to their courses.

How many subject are written in WAEC as well as in NECO or GCE? The answer is 9 subjects and you are required to have at least credit passes in 5 core subjects.

The minimum number of subjects a candidate can sit for is eight (8) subjects while the maximum is nine (9) subjects. All Senior Secondary schools in the Federation present Candidates for the SSCE Internal.

These must include the following :
(i) English Language
(ii) Mathematics
(iii) At least one Nigerian Language.
(iv) At least one of Physics, Chemistry and Biology for science students.
(v) At least one of Literature-in-English, History and Geography for Art and Commercial students.
(vi) Agricultural Science or at least one vocational subject.

Like I mentioned earlier, You are required to write 9 subjects in WAEC, NECO and GCE. However, you may choose to write less than 9 subjects if you are rewriting/resitting for O level exam. Many people resist for O’level examinations because they failed or did not pass the required core subjects. You can ignore the subjects you passed and write only those ones you failed.

According to the West African Examinations Counsil on Twitter as shown above, the core compulsory subjects in WAEC, NECO, GCE and NABTEB are;

  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Civic Education
  • Trade Subject
